Expensive Clothes: Worth The Cost?

Saturday, 17th October 2009

I’m ignoring the likes of Prada and Gucci here, I’m talking about the high priced men’s fashion brands like Abercrombie & Fitch and Jack Wills that have shot up in sales in recent years. So what do they cost so much?

Ask a lot of people, and they’ll tell you it’s not justified at all. Seems a fair point, for a decent Jack Wills hoodie you’ll pay about 90 quid, and in my opinion you can get better stuff from the more mainstream stores; Next, Burton, Debenhams, they all sell some great hoodies.

But this is all about the branding. It’s about showing off. It’s about wearing a better name than the next man. The mechanical parts in a Ferrari aren’t worth the price tag, but how many men dream of owning one? We want Ferraris for the sake of having a Ferrari, you can get similar performance from a top end go-kart, but it’s just not quite the same.

Still, if you hop on the Abercromie and Wills (or whatever it is) bandwagon, be warned that some will look up to you, others will associate with you, but there will be a large group who laugh at you. Some of the clothes from these brands are average, some on the other hand are very good, but you can be sure that for less money, you’ll be able to get menswear that looks just as good. Being suave isn’t about how much you’ve got in your wallet, it’s about looking good, and if you can do it cheap then all the better.

Personally, I’m not sure which side to take, as we all subconsciously pay for overpriced branding everyday, but at £80 for a pair of joggers, well I think you can jog on…
